Mary I: life and legacy
Life and career
Mary survived the breakdown of her parents' marriage and exclusion from succession before defeating an attempt to install Lady Jane Grey. Her government restored Catholicism and persecuted Protestant opponents, burning about 280 people. War with France and the loss of Calais damaged a reign later caricatured through hostile Protestant memory.
Historical context
Their career illuminates the changing relationship between monarchy, Parliament, party, empire and popular politics. British history is also the history of its nations and its global connections, not only Westminster.
Legacy and interpretation
Mary I's reputation has been shaped by commemoration, political argument and the survival of unequal evidence. A responsible biography compares contemporary records with later interpretation, recognises people affected by their decisions and avoids reducing broad change to one famous life.
