Overview

Communism developed from critiques of capitalism and private ownership into varied parties, revolutions and states. Marx and Engels imagined class emancipation, but twentieth-century communist governments often concentrated power in one party.

The term therefore covers both aspirations for equality and historical systems of coercion, planning, welfare, repression and resistance.

The essential guide

01

Ideas and movements

Marx argued that class conflict drove historical change and that workers could overthrow capitalist property. Socialist parties debated reform, revolution, nation and democracy.

02

Bolshevik model

Revolution and civil war produced a centralised party-state in Russia. The Communist International encouraged parties to adopt disciplined organisation under Soviet influence.

03

Stalinism and planning

Forced collectivisation and rapid industrialisation transformed the Soviet Union at immense human cost. Purges and the Gulag institutionalised mass repression.

04

Global paths

Chinese, Vietnamese, Cuban and other revolutions emerged from local struggles as well as Soviet influence. Communist states adopted different economic and political strategies.

05

Reform and collapse

Some governments pursued market reform while retaining party rule. Eastern European regimes fell in 1989, and the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.
