Overview

Irish history has been shaped by Gaelic societies, English conquest, plantation, religious division, union, mass migration, revolution and partition.

Irish experiences were never uniform: region, class, gender, religion and political allegiance produced different responses to British rule and nationalism.

The essential guide

01

Conquest and plantation

English authority expanded unevenly before Tudor conquest and seventeenth-century plantations transferred land and power. Confessional identities became closely tied to politics.

02

Union, famine and reform

The 1801 union created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The Great Famine killed about one million people and drove mass emigration within a political economy governed from London.

03

Revolution and partition

Home Rule conflict, the Easter Rising, independence war and civil war created the Irish Free State while Northern Ireland remained in the United Kingdom. Later conflict required a negotiated peace process.

04

Interpreting conquest, union and nation

Confessional division, landholding, migration and British state power shaped Irish politics without determining one inevitable path to partition. Nationalist and unionist traditions contained substantial internal disagreement.

Commemoration has often organised events into rival moral narratives. Historians compare political claims with demographic, local and social evidence and distinguish later memory from contemporary possibility.
