Qin Shi Huang: life and legacy
King of Qin
Ying Zheng inherited the Qin throne during the Warring States period. Qin military organisation and administrative reforms gave the state resources to defeat its rivals.
First emperor
After the final conquest in 221 BC he adopted a new imperial title. The regime replaced many hereditary territories with centrally appointed officials and promoted common standards for writing, weights and measures.
Power and coercion
Roads, frontier works and imperial tours expressed central power, while heavy labour demands and punishments imposed severe costs. Later accounts of book burning and scholar persecution require careful reading because hostile Han historians shaped the record.
Death and legacy
The emperor's vast tomb complex, including the terracotta army, reflected beliefs about authority and the afterlife. Qin rule collapsed soon after his death, yet the idea and machinery of a unified empire endured under the Han.
