Overview

Chinese history encompasses changing dynasties, states, frontiers and societies rather than one unbroken political system. Ideas of imperial unity coexisted with long periods of division and exchange.

Nineteenth-century war and imperial pressure contributed to revolution, civil war and competing projects of national reconstruction.

The essential guide

01

Dynasties and statecraft

Imperial governments used taxation, law, examination and local elites to govern large populations. Confucian traditions were influential but always interpreted and contested.

02

Commerce and global connections

Silk, ceramics, silver and migration connected China to wider Asian and global networks. European maritime power altered but did not create these exchanges.

03

Revolution and republic

The Qing fell in 1911. Nationalists, communists and regional powers competed amid invasion and civil war; Communist victory in 1949 created the People's Republic.

04

Dynasty, empire and revolution

Dynastic change did not erase older institutions, and the category China changed across imperial, republican and revolutionary periods. Regional economies, frontier peoples and overseas connections are central to the story.

Official chronicles are exceptionally rich but reflect court priorities. Archaeology, local gazetteers, private writing and foreign archives help historians test narratives of uninterrupted unity or sudden Western-led change.
